Tashichho Dzong

The Thimphu Dzong is located on the west bank of river Wang Chhu which lies exactly on the north of the city. Lama Gyalwa Lhanangpa had built Dho-Ngen Dzong (Blue Stone Dzong)
in 1216 on the hill above Thimphu where Dechen Phodrang is currently standing. A Few years later after the completion of monastery, Lama Phajo Drukgom Shigpo who is known for bringing in Drukpa Kagyu lineage took privilege to govern the dzong. Zhabdrung took over the dzong from the governor and renamed it Trashi chhoe Dzong (Fortress of glorious Religion) in 1641. It could accommodate a few monks and civil officials during the earlier times but later it was distended so that they accommodate more.

The dzong is site for formal coronation of the fifth king in 2008 and the annual tsechu festivals and huge celebration of city are done there. It is mainly used as the seat of government since 1952 and currently dynasties the throne room and offices of the king, the secretariat and the ministries of home affairs and finance. The various other government department are also retained in buildings nearby.

The entrance from the northeast are filled with the blessing of the four guardian kings and the images of Drukpa Kunley, Thangtong Gyelpo and Togden Pajo (the founder of nearby Phajoding Monastery) are displayed there. The courtyard of the dzong are filled with excellent proportion of the architecture and frequent flight of pigeons and the sound of prayer wheels can be heard.
