Things to Pack

When traveling to Bhutan, it is important to pack appropriately for the country’s climate and cultural expectations. Here are some recommended clothing and accessories to bring:

  1. Comfortable walking shoes: As many areas in Bhutan involve walking and hiking, comfortable walking shoes are essential.
  2. Lightweight layers: Bhutan has a cool and dry climate, with temperatures varying depending on the elevation. It is recommended to pack lightweight layers that can be added or removed as needed.
  3. Warm clothing: During the winter months, warm clothing such as jackets, sweaters, and coats are recommended.
  4. Modest clothing: Bhutan is a conservative country, and visitors are expected to dress modestly and respectfully. It is recommended to bring clothing that covers the shoulders, arms, and legs, especially when visiting religious sites and temples.
  5. Rain gear: Bhutan experiences monsoon season from June to August, and rain can occur at any time of the year. It is recommended to pack a waterproof jacket or umbrella.
  6. Sun protection: Bhutan has high elevations, and the sun can be intense. It is recommended to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  7. Small backpack: A small backpack can be useful for carrying essentials such as water, snacks, and extra layers.
  8. Camera with good Storage: Bhutan is a beautiful country with many unique sights and experiences, and a camera can help capture these memories.
  9. Universal Adapter: to ensure that your devices can be charged and used. Many hotels and accommodations in Bhutan may also provide adapters for guests to use, but it is always best to bring your own to ensure compatibility.
  10. Personal medication: If you have any personal medication or medical equipment, it is important to bring these with you.
  11. Cash for Purchases: the Bhutanese Ngultrum is the official currency, but US dollars and Indian Rupees are widely accepted. As ATMs are scarce outside of Paro and Thimphu, it is advisable to carry cash when making purchases in other towns. Bhutan offers a variety of exquisite mementos such as textiles, masks, and wall hangings that make for perfect souvenirs to take back home.

It is important to pack appropriately for Bhutan’s climate and cultural expectations, taking into consideration the country’s unique traditions and customs.
